Flipper (Removable Partial Denture)

What Is a Flipper?

A "flipper" is an informal term for an interim or temporary removable partial denture, usually made of acrylic. It's a lightweight, removable appliance that replaces one or a few missing teeth. Flippers are often used:

  • As a temporary solution while healing from extractions
  • While waiting for a permanent prosthesis
  • As a lower-cost alternative to a permanent partial denture

Coverage Status: LIKELY COVERED (as a partial denture)

Removable partial dentures are a covered benefit under Health First Colorado adult dental.

Important Caveats

DentaQuest Approves the "Most Cost-Effective" Option

DentaQuest's policy is to authorize the most cost-effective treatment that meets clinical standards. This means:

  • They may approve a standard acrylic partial denture rather than a more elaborate flipper
  • The specific type and material may be determined during the prior authorization process
  • Your dentist should discuss options and submit the auth with clinical justification

The 7-Year Rule

Once you receive a partial denture (including a flipper), you're generally not eligible for a replacement for 7 years. Plan carefully:

  • If you get a flipper now as a temporary measure, you may not be able to get a different partial denture for 7 years
  • Discuss with your dentist whether to go with a temporary flipper or invest in a more durable partial from the start

Lost/Stolen/Broken Replacement

Replacement of lost, stolen, or irreparably broken dentures is a once per member lifetime benefit. Use this wisely.

What to Ask Your Dentist

  • "Will DentaQuest authorize a flipper, or should we request a standard partial denture?"
  • "Given the 7-year replacement limit, what type of partial denture gives me the best long-term value?"
  • "How long after my extraction(s) should we wait before making the flipper/partial?"
