How to Prepare Your Application
General Tips
Most rental assistance programs in Colorado require similar documentation. Gathering these items in advance will speed up your application significantly.
Commonly Required Documents
Identity and Residency
- Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, passport)
- Proof of Colorado residency (utility bill, bank statement, mail with your address)
- Social Security numbers for household members (some programs don't require this)
Housing Documentation
- Current lease agreement (signed copy)
- Demand for Rent or eviction notice (FED) if applicable (required for ERAP and TRUA)
- Landlord contact information (name, phone, email, mailing address)
- Landlord's W-9 form (some programs require this for payment)
Income Verification
- Pay stubs (last 30 days)
- Tax returns or W-2s (most recent year)
- Unemployment benefits documentation
- Social Security or disability income statements
- Self-employment income records
- Written statement if zero income
Utility Bills (if requesting utility help)
- Most recent utility bills from Denver Water and/or Xcel Energy
- Account numbers for each utility
Hardship Documentation
- Written statement explaining your financial hardship
- Documentation of job loss, medical bills, reduced hours, or other circumstances
Program-Specific Requirements
Colorado ERAP
- Must have an active eviction document (Demand for Rent or FED filing)
- Income at or below 80% AMI

Denver TRUA
- Must have a Demand for Rent from landlord OR active eviction case (FED)
- Income at or below 80% AMI
- Must reside in the City AND County of Denver
- Immigration status disclosure is NOT required

Colorado LEAP
- Income must not exceed 60% of State Median Income
- Proof of lawful presence in the U.S. (for those born outside U.S.)
- Must pay heating costs (directly or through rent)

Application Strategy
- Apply to multiple programs - You can apply to state ERAP, Denver TRUA, and nonprofit programs simultaneously
- Watch for application windows - Both ERAP and TRUA use periodic application windows with random selection
- Call 211 first - They can help you identify which programs you qualify for
- Keep copies of everything you submit
- Respond quickly to any requests for additional information
